How Large Appliance Recycling Works

Dropping off your old appliance is all you have to do, but it is only the start of the recycling process—the steps required to recycle responsibly differ depending on the type of appliance. Certain appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers, use chemical refrigerants classified as ozone-depleting substances (ODS) which are harmful to the environment.

The process of recycling appliances containing ODS gases begins with a licensed technician removing the gases to go to a refrigerant recycling/processing facility where they are carefully disposed of.

MARR is the only approved stewardship plan for major appliances in BC. Learn more about how we responsibly handle refrigerants.

After the ODS gases have been removed from appliances in an environmentally sound manner, they are consolidated and sent for processing. This applies to the metal from appliances that do not contain ODS as well.

There Is No Cost to Drop Off Appliances for Recycling

One of the best parts about recycling with Large Appliance Recycling is that drop-off is free! Whether you're disposing of a refrigerator, washing machine, dryer, or any other large appliance, there is no cost to recycle.

The Environmental Benefits of Recycling Appliances

Recycling appliances offers numerous environmental benefits.

Conservation of Resources

Recycling appliances allows for the recovery of valuable materials such as diverse metals. These materials can then be used to manufacture new products, reducing the need for new resources and the energy required to extract and process them.

Reduces Landfill Waste

Large appliances like refrigerators and washing machines take up significant space in landfills. Recycling these items reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills, mitigating the environmental impact of landfill overflow and decreasing the release of harmful substances into the environment.

Reduces Energy Usage

Manufacturing products from recycled materials typically requires less energy compared to using new materials. By recycling appliances, energy consumption during the production process is reduced, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions and a decreased carbon footprint.

Pollution Prevention

Many household appliances contain hazardous substances such as mercury, lead, and ODSs. Improper disposal of these appliances can lead to the release of these toxic substances into the environment, posing risks to human health and ecosystems. Recycling ensures that these hazardous materials are safely extracted and disposed of, preventing pollution and environmental contamination.
